The Department of History at the University of Washington seeks to appoint a tenured, full-time (100% FTE, 9-month service) associate or full professor to the Scott and Dorothy Bullitt Endowed Chair of American History. The search is part of a broader initiative to enhance the Department’s strength in the study of U.S. histories of race and empire. We are looking particularly for scholars whose research agenda, graduate mentoring, and undergraduate teaching will further our Department’s commitment to prepare students to think historically about matters of critical relevance today and to engage knowledgeably with such urgent issues as racism, sexism and gender discrimination, citizenship, immigration, nationalism, indigeneity, state violence, religious persecution, and U.S. foreign policy. The successful candidate will develop and teach introductory and upper division courses with capacity for large enrollments of diverse students. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. The anticipated start date is September 16, 2020.
Applicants must demonstrate a record of teaching and research exploring U.S. racial formations in any time period, including but not limited to African American, Native American, Latinx, Pacific Islander, Asian American, and Arab and Muslim American histories. Candidates must demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching. A Ph.D., or foreign equivalent, is required.
