Stephen Wertheim is a Fellow of King's College, University of Cambridge. He is a historian of U.S. foreign relations and world order from the nineteenth century to the present.
Stephen specializes in ideas of American diplomacy. His scholarship has examined liberal internationalism, American exceptionalism, grand strategy, international organization, and humanitarian intervention. He is writing a book (Harvard University Press) on the birth of U.S. global supremacy during World War II—specifically, how officials and intellectuals conceived this vocation before Pearl Harbor and won popular legitimacy for it.
His essays have appeared in Dissent, Foreign Affairs, The Nation, TLS, and The Washington Post.
Stephen holds a PhD from Columbia (2015) and a BA summa cum laude from Harvard (2007).
